Our newsletter is made by and for LGBTQI+ people who are incarcerated or who have been formerly incarcerated. It is free and sent to our members inside prisons every 3 months.
The newsletter includes:
- Letters from incarcerated members of Inside Out
- Artwork, drawings and paintings
- Poetry and short stories
- Skills sharing and information (e.g. “How to get a transgender support group up and running in prison”)
- Articles
- Recipes, movement exercises, and puzzles
- Community news
- A list of organisations, groups and services for LGBTQI+ people and/or people who are criminalised or incarcerated.
Who is the newsletter for?
Our newsletter is primarily for people who are or have been incarcerated. This includes prison, juvenile detention centres and immigration detention (on-shore and off-shore detention). It is for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, sistergirl, brotherboy, 2spirit, takapui, fafafine, asexual and other people with diverse gender and sexual identities.
If you have been previously incarcerated and identify as LGBTIQ+, or if you have friends and family who are LGBTIQ+ and in prison or detention, we would also love to hear from you.
Do you have to identify as LGBTQI+ to receive the newsletter?
No. You don’t have to identify as LGBTQI+ to receive the newsletter. You might be curious or questioning your gender or sexuality. You might just support the LGBTQI+ community. You might have loved ones who identify as gender or sexually diverse. This is an inclusive newsletter! Going on our mailing list doesn’t mean you identity in a particular way.

We do not publish the full newsletter online to protect the privacy of our incarcerated members.
