About Inside Out

Inside Out is a grassroots network of LGBTIQA+ people both inside and outside prisons across so-called Australia.

We aim to create a sense of community across the walls, amplify the voices of incarcerated queer and trans people, and provide access to information, community news and resources.

As of 2023, there are around 300 members of Inside Out who are in prisons across Australia.

“It is so difficult and isolating in gaol however the thing that helps me push through the dark days is that I know I’m not alone with how I feel, that there is another gay person out there feeling the same thing…thank you from the bottom of my heart I’m so happy about your organisation.”

What we do

We produce a quarterly newsletter with content by and for incarcerated LGBTIQA+ people and allies. Every 3 months the newsletter features around 30 pages of letters, poetry, artwork and articles. We also include a community news section to let people know about interesting queer news that they may not have access to information about. The newsletter is sent out for free to over 300 people in prisons around the country.

All LGBTIQA+ people and allies in prison can join our mailing list by sending us a letter to: PO Box 2446, Footscray Vic 3011. You can also contact us on behalf of a friend or loved one inside.

While the newsletter is currently the main project of Inside Out, we hope to expand in the future to include other projects in collaboration with queer and trans folks in prisons around Australia.

Please be note that Inside Out does not currently have the capacity to provide support in terms of individual advocacy, legal advice, financial support, or counselling. Check out our [SERVICE PAGE NAME] for a list of services and organisations that may be able to help.

Our members can always contact us if they have a question or want to talk about something, and if we can’t help we can give suggestions of where to go for further information and support.

Incarcerated members can also join our Birthday Club and will receive a card from us on their birthday.
